چکیده

In a cooperative relay network, a relay node (R) may facilitate data transmission to the destination node (D), when the latter is unable to decode the source node (S) data correctly. This paper considers such a system model and presents a crosslayer approach to jointly design adaptive modulation and coding (AMC) at the physical layer and cooperative truncated automatic repeat request (C-ARQ) protocol at the data link layer for quality of service (QoS) constrained applications. The average spectral efficiency and packet loss rate of the joint C-ARQ and AMC scheme are first derived in closed-form. Aiming at maximizing the system spectral efficiency, AMC schemes for S-D and R-D links are optimized while a prescribed packet loss rate constraint is satisfied. As an interesting application, joint link adaptation and blockage mitigation in land mobile satellite communications (LMSC) with temporally correlated channels is then investigated. In LMSC, the S node data can be delivered to the D node when the S-D is in the outage, thereby provisioning the QoS requirements. For applications without instantaneous feedback, an optimized rate selection scheme based on the channel statistics is also devised. Detailed and insightful numerical results are presented, which indicate the superior performance of the proposed joint AMC and C-ARQ schemes over their optimized joint AMC and traditional ARQ counterparts.

Cross-layer design in AMC/ARQ-based wireless systems with cooperative relaying

Description: Recently, there have been a great deal of research efforts on cross-layer design in wireless networks (see, e.g., [1, 2, 3] and references therein). Furthermore, the past decades gave birth to a large number of innovative techniques at the physical layer (PHY) to overcome the impact of wireless fading channels and to support the diverse quality-of-service (QoS) requirements for het...

QoS-aware Opportunistic Cooperative Error Control Mechanism Based on Channel State Sensing for Internet of Things

It is well known that the performance of Internet of Things application services is easy to be affected by internal noise of sensor, external environment interference and constriction of system resource. In order to solve the above problems, we studied the characteristics of bit error rate, outage ratio, signal to noise, and scale of relay sensors with channel state to choose the optimal transm...

Active interference cancellation-aided QoS-aware distributed ARQ for cognitive radios with heterogeneous traffics

Relay-assisted Automatic Repeat reQuest (ARQ), which allows the relays instead of the source to carry out retransmissions of packets erroneously received at the destination, is an efficient cooperative transmission technique to improve link reliability with high spectrum efficiency in wireless networks. In cognitive radio (CR) systems, however, this relay-assisted ARQ could induce large latency...

Joint-design of Link-adaptive Modulation and Coding with Adaptive Arq for Cooperative Amplify and Forward Relaying System

This paper analyzes the efficiency of a joint-design of an adaptive modulation and coding (AMC) at the physical (PHY) layer with an adaptive R max -truncated selective-repeat automatic repeat request (ARQ) protocol at the medium access control (MAC) layer to maximize the throughput of cooperative nonregenerative relay networks under prescribed delay and/or error performance constraints. Particu...
